AI compute on an island that stays green.

A solar-powered GPU facility on an uninhabited island in the Indian Ocean. It starts at 1 MW and grows to 5 MW on the same island, without freshwater cooling, and with a plan to leave the Maldives better connected than before.

INDIAN OCEAN · UTC+5 · ONE SUN, 24 HOURS

1→ 5 MW

First phase, designed to grow on the same island.

Design targets for the first phase. Final figures will be confirmed at launch.

The island plan

One 50-hectare island, three phases, no second site.

We secure the whole island up front and build in phases. Solar goes on open ground and onto the lagoon. Press a phase to see what is built and how much compute it adds.

Compute is peak theoretical FP4 dense throughput of the NVIDIA HGX B300 reference configuration (108 PFLOPS and 288 GB of memory per GPU). The final platform will be confirmed before launch. The layout is a schematic and not to scale.

Compute grows five times. The island stays the same size.

Design targets by phase

Each chart is scaled to its own 5 MW value. The highlighted bar follows the phase selected in the island plan.

How it works

Power, cooling and water designed for an island, not adapted to one.

Power

Sun first, diesel only as backup

About 8 MWp of solar and a 22 MWh battery carry the first phase around the clock. Diesel generators stand by for rare cloudy spells and are not the main source.

Cooling

Liquid cooling on warm water

Direct liquid cooling runs on 45 °C water, so air-cooled dry coolers are enough all year. No chillers, no evaporative towers, no freshwater used to reject heat.

Water

Water that stays in the ocean

A small reverse-osmosis plant covers site needs. Space is reserved for a unit that turns server waste heat into additional fresh water.

Ground

Built up, not down

Server halls, batteries and switchgear sit on raised platforms 2–3 m above ground. We do not dig basements, which protects the island's freshwater lens.

Pilots

Clean energy pilots

A 100 kW tidal-kite pilot, subject to current measurements, and floating solar in the lagoon during the growth phase, subject to environmental assessment.

Network

Short fiber to a cable landing

Several international subsea systems come ashore in the Maldives. The island connects to a landing station with a dedicated fiber link.

Closed loop
Environmental responsibility

An island project is only credible if the island ends up better protected than before.

Most island sites burn imported fuel for every kilowatt-hour and draw on a small freshwater supply. This one is designed the other way round.

~2.6million L

Diesel avoided every year, compared with a diesel-only site.

~7,000t CO₂

Avoided every year. Estimate at 2.68 kg of CO₂ per litre of diesel.

0L

Freshwater drawn from the island's supply to cool the servers.

The remaining share is backup generation for cloudy spells and the clean-energy pilots. Design estimates for the first phase, confirmed at launch.

Environmental assessment first

An environmental impact assessment is completed before construction, and the regulator is involved from the start.

Required before build

The island stays green

No clear-cutting for solar. Existing trees are kept where possible, native species are planted, and at least half of the island remains natural vegetation in every phase. The plan keeps 79%, 68% and 57%.

Design rule, every phase

Reef-safe construction

Moorings and anchoring are planned to avoid damage to corals. Fuel storage is bunded and has a spill plan.

Design rule

No freshwater cooling, no basements

Two design choices that remove the biggest risks to a small island's water.

Design rule

Heat turned into water

Space is reserved for a desalination unit driven by server waste heat, so a by-product becomes fresh water.

Reserved in the plan

Published environmental reporting

We intend to publish energy, water, diesel use and reef-monitoring results every year, reviewed by an independent party.

Planned commitment

How the island is used, by phase

Follows the phase selected in the island plan above. Areas are an indicative layout and will be fixed after the site survey and environmental assessment.

CSR · Social contribution and regional development

A data center should leave something behind in the atolls around it.

The project is led by a Maldives-registered operator. These are the commitments we are building into the plan with Maldivian partners, authorities and the communities nearest the island.

People

Local jobs and a training pipeline

Running a liquid-cooled GPU site needs electricians, marine technicians, network engineers and operators. We want most of them to be Maldivians.

  • First-hire preference for Maldivian candidates in construction and operations
  • A technician training program with local institutions, started before first capacity
  • Apprenticeships on the island for graduates of national technical colleges
Economy

Local suppliers first

An island build runs on boats, logistics, catering, accommodation and civil works. Those orders should stay in the country.

  • Maldivian companies invited to tender for marine transport, civil works and site services
  • Procurement terms published, so local firms know how to qualify
  • Long-term lease and operating taxes paid in the Maldives
Knowledge

Compute for Maldivian researchers and startups

Access to GPUs is the hard part for a small country's universities and young companies. We plan to set aside capacity for them.

  • A reserved share of compute for national universities and research bodies
  • Preferred terms for Maldivian startups that move from a first experiment to a reserved cluster
  • Climate and ocean models run on site, for a country on the front line of sea-level rise
Neighbours

Water, connectivity and a seat at the table

The nearest communities should see benefits they can use, and have a say in how the project is run.

  • Surplus fresh water from the waste-heat unit offered to neighbouring communities, subject to agreement
  • Fiber and landing-station capacity that can also serve nearby atolls
  • A community advisory group that meets regularly, with minutes published
  • Marine monitoring done together with Maldivian marine biologists, with results shared openly

Status. These are design intentions at the early-announcement stage. Their scope, targets and partners will be agreed with the Maldivian authorities and communities, then published with dates as approvals are confirmed.

Our CSR contribution, mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Seven goals the project touches directly. Each one is tied to something the island is designed to do.

7Affordable and clean energy

About 90% of annual energy from solar, backed by batteries, instead of imported diesel.

13Climate action

About 7,000 t of CO₂ avoided every year against a diesel-only island site.

14Life below water

Reef-safe moorings, bunded fuel storage and marine monitoring with local biologists.

6Clean water

No freshwater cooling, and a reserved unit that turns server heat into fresh water.

4Quality education

Technician training and reserved compute for Maldivian universities.

8Decent work

First-hire preference for Maldivians and local suppliers for island works.

9Industry, innovation, infrastructure

A national-scale AI facility and fiber capacity that can also serve nearby atolls.

How the commitments are kept honest

A commitment only counts if someone outside the project can check it. This is the cycle we intend to run.

Location and security

Neutral ground in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives sits between the Gulf, India, East Africa and Southeast Asia, on the route where Europe's and Asia's subsea cables meet.

Time offset from the Maldives
MaldivesUTC+5
Gulf (UAE)−1 h
India+0:30
East Africa (Nairobi)−2 h
Singapore+3 h
Western Europe (London)−4 to −5 h

One working day overlaps with teams across all five regions. Regulatory statements are general information, not legal advice. Customers should confirm their own compliance position.

Physical isolation

An island perimeter with controlled access by sea and air, single-tenant halls and a site not shared with neighbours.

Private network

A dedicated fiber link to a cable landing station, with routes that can use more than one international system.

Data under your control

Dedicated hardware, encryption keys held by the client, no telemetry sent out by default, every administrator action logged.

Clear legal footing

A Maldives-registered operator with a transparent ownership chain. The Uninhabited Islands and Lagoons Act sets leases of 21 years, extendable up to 50.

Screened access

End-user screening in line with applicable export-control rules. The Maldives is in Country Group B under US export rules.

Questions

What people ask first.

When will it open?

We are targeting the second quarter of 2027 for first capacity. The first phase is a 1 MW modular build, and the date depends on the island lease, the environmental assessment and other approvals. Registered users are told first, and we will publish updated dates as approvals are confirmed.

Which island?

The island will be announced once the lease is confirmed.

Why the Maldives?

Strong sun for solar power, subsea cables landing in the islands, a location between the Gulf, India, Africa and Southeast Asia, a clear legal framework for island projects and neutral ground for customers from different regions.

Is it really environmentally responsible?

The design avoids the main island risks: no freshwater cooling, no basement excavation, solar as the main energy source and at least half of the island kept as natural vegetation. An environmental impact assessment comes before construction, and we intend to publish annual environmental results.

What does the project give back to the Maldives?

Local hiring and training, local procurement, reserved compute for researchers and startups, shared fresh water and connectivity for nearby communities, and a community advisory group. These are planned commitments that will be agreed with Maldivian partners and published.

How is my data kept safe?

Through physical isolation of the island, single-tenant halls, a private fiber link, encryption keys held by the client, full administrator logs and screened access. We will publish the security architecture and audit results as they are completed.

Which GPUs will be available?

The latest NVIDIA Blackwell-class hardware: 512 GPUs in phase 1, up to 2,560 at 5 MW. The exact platform will be confirmed before launch.

How much will it cost?

Final prices are announced at launch. Pre-registration involves no payment and no commitment.
